What do I do if my console game locks up, freezes, or displays an error during gameplay?

Several factors may cause a console game to freeze, lockup or display an error during gameplay:
 
1. Dirty or damaged disc or media
Check the disc for fingerprints, smudges or any other marks that may prevent data being read from the disc. Wipe the disc carefully with a soft, dry cloth from the center hole towards the outer rim in a straight line. Make sure to handle the disc by the edges and avoid touching the surface. Return the game disc to its case when not in use.
 
2. Overheated console system
Make sure the console system is in a well ventilated area, away from direct sunlight or any sources of heat. The system's internal fan vent opening should be kept clear of obstructions. Take a break during long periods of gameplay to power down the system and allow it to cool.
 
3. Internal or console system error
The laser lens that reads the disc may be dirty or damaged and unable to read data from the disc. A universal media laser lens cleaning kit can be effective in removing dust and dirt from the console system and resolving the error. For service or repair issues, refer to the documentation provided by the console system's manufacturer.
 
4. Conflict with attached peripherals
It is recommended to unplug any peripherals, i.e., microphone, guitar, drums etc. that are not needed for gameplay.
 
5. Corrupt saved game or game profile
This can occur for a variety of reasons. If the lock-up or freeze continues, it is recommended to delete the saved game or the game profile and start fresh.
