How do I fix performance issues in STAR WARS™ Battlefront II for the PC?

I continue to crash back to Windows at the Main Menu. What should I do?
Go to the Windows Start button and click on Settings > Control Panel. Open the Sounds and Audio Devices control panel. What is currently selected under the SOUND PLAYBACK: DEFAULT DEVICE drop down menu? Does selecting a different option here (i.e. Choosing your audio card) for the Sound Playback Device help to resolve the problem with the game?

(Please be aware that you might need to reset this option before running other applications.)

Keyboard Limitations
Some keyboards may have limitations in the game. You may be unable to use multiple keys simultaneously. For example: If you are pressing two keys at the same time, only one key may register the action that you chose

How do I get into the 3rd person view?
The V button should allow you to change your view. Otherwise, you can switch to 3rd person by going into the Game Options menu.

Integrated Video Chipsets
When your computer has an onboard video chip on the motherboard and the system only meets the minimum requirement for RAM, you may experience various problems that occur because the video chipset may use system memory for its video memory. You may experience the following issues:
  • The game may not run.
  • Transitions may be slow.
  • You may go to a black screen when task switching for a prolonged period of time.
  • The frame rate may be slow and choppy.
  • You may not be able to join Multiplayer games.

What should I do If my computer goes to a black screen or locks up?
If you end up at a black screen or the game appears to lock up, please press ALT-F4 before trying anything else. If this fails, press CTRL-ALT-DEL once, click Task Manager, and then choose END TASK on Star Wars™ Battlefront II. If you do not see a dialog box after pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL, press ENTER twice and this should take you back to the desktop. Then restart your computer and try running the game again.

Adjusting Output Modes
Adjusting the Output Mode in Audio Options may not correctly change the speaker configuration. This occurs because the Output Mode is using the speaker configuration that is selected in the Speaker Settings application for your specific audio device.

Administrative Rights
Some steps noted in this Troubleshooting Guide require you to make adjustments to your system, such as setting up your monitor. These steps will not be possible to complete unless you are logged onto the system with Administrative rights. Without these rights, you may be unable to select an option because it is grayed out.

Administrative rights allow a user to make changes to a computer, its settings, access rights, files, user accounts and is required to update DirectX. Before installing the game, you should consider whether a minor or other user should be granted local Administrative or Power User rights because of these capabilities. You do not need to grant these rights to play Star Wars™ Battlefront II.

Character movement without input
When a game controller is connected to your computer, it may cause your player character and/or mouse pointer to move in the game without any user input. If this occurs, please check the throttle on the game controller to assure that it is set to the center position. We recommend that you check the game controller control panel to assure that your game controller is properly calibrated in Windows.

Multiplayer Connection Options
When you choose to play a multiplayer game, you have two options available for connecting to or hosting a game. These options are:
  • Internet: These games are found via queries to GameSpy servers. If the host you join is on your LAN, game data will still be passed at LAN speeds.
     
  • LAN: These games are found via broadcast packets. The game data is sent at high resolution. Because of this, the game packet size is doubled.

Unable to Launch the Game after Installation (DVD)
If you are experiencing problems trying to launch the program after a successful installation, please try the following:
  • Re-boot the system and try launching the program again.
  • Make sure you have the BFII DVD in a local DVD drive.
  • Close all other running applications, especially things such as: Clean Sweep, anti-virus software, ZoneAlarm, and DVD burning software (for example: Nero or EZ CD Creator).
  • If you have more than one local DVD drive, try all drives.
  • If you have a Virtual Drive installed, make sure it is disabled.
  • Make sure you have updated drivers for your optical (DVD) drive AND that you have the latest motherboard drivers available.
  • Make sure you wait for the disc authentication after the program launches. It can take up to one-half minute or more for initial disc authentication. Your mouse pointer may change into a spinning disc pointer while the disc is authenticating.
If you have tried all of the above and are still having trouble, please generate an analysis file for submission to the SecuROM tech support group so we may be of further assistance. The analysis file contains important information to help us analyze the program launch issues you are experiencing. After successfully creating the file, the necessary data will be exported and stored in an “AnalysisLog.sr0” file. Should I have other programs running in the background?
Generally, it is not a good idea to run any other programs in the background while playing Star Wars™ Battlefront II. Please disable any active screen savers while running this game, as they may interrupt the game and cause problems. Various video, sound, or memory problems may occur if other programs are running, including virus-detection utilities. You may need to disable or close programs that start automatically when Windows is started. Some of these programs display icons on your system tray. If you have icons in your system tray, right-click on each of them and select the option to disable, unload, exit, or close them before running Star Wars™ Battlefront II. The next time you start your computer, these items will load once more and the icons will return. If you cannot disable them from the taskbar and you experience problems running Star Wars™ Battlefront II, we recommend that you consult Windows Help for information on how to remove shortcuts or how to keep other programs from running in the background.
